DUE THURSDAY 12/6
My instructions in class were for you to define certain terms. After further consideration, I am asking that you complete the following assignment.
You are to post a "memoir" as if you are a refugee or an internally displaced person (IDP). Based on our class activity describe how it felt to be rushed from your home, how you decided what to take with you and if you thought the asylum process was fair. In addition, write briefly how you think a refugee or IDP crisis can affect other global issues like environmental destruction, poverty and education in particular. Post your responses here. They are due by Thursday 12/6.

So much has happened and all I want is to go home, but I no longer have a home. Civil war broke out, and my family and I were rushed out of our home, and we are now living in an asylum. We didn't have much time, but on the way out, I grabbed what I thought would be important. The most important thing I grabbed was my family and my own's identification. This was a major help in keeping my family from being left for dead. It didn't seem fair, some families were turned away because they're identification wasn't accepted, but they had it. I am just thankful my entire family made it through, and we are on our way out of the country, to safety. I have heard that many people may not get to go, because all the refugees going into other countries are impacting the countries' economy in a negative way. We may be extra people to support, but don't they know that living in poverty is better than living here. I pray we will leave soon, and I cannot feel fully safe until we are across the border.
Conor:
This is wonderful work. You certainly grasped the activity and I can tell from your writing that you are aware of what the other "refugees" and "IDP's" were going through. Yes, families did get turned away in our enactment. This is true to what can happen when a country is in turmoil and it's citizens are forced to flee. What we need to also explore is what the US position on refugees is for certain nations and why the laws are as such. Very good work.
wow this assignment wasn't fair because i and my family was in the us and then we were told that there wasn't enough money to support us but any ways that's america for you but beside that i think it went well.also at least i and my family was able to go to america with our id not like other family's.
Although it is hard to get by, I am grateful that my family and I are one of the few that have the opportunity to escape this horrible war. We were rushed out of our home and had to decide what to take at that very moment. We almost left our identification cards, but thank goodness we didn't, for thats what allowed us to get by. Many of my other family and friends who did not bring their identification cards were left behind. They must all stay back as refugees in the country and endure its hardships. What will my family do with not a dime in our pockets? What will become of me with no education? Our country is slowly being destroyed. I hope there is a better and safer life that lies in our near future.

As a internally displaced person, IDP, I felt that there was no hope when trying to get out of the country. We were asked to take five things and the five things we took was money, machete, id cards, lantern, and a water jug. My family fled and had identification cards but we were denied because our paperwork was not in order. This wasn't fair, the identification cards were "forged" and we felt like we were being turned away in a desperate time of need. So my family was sent back and we struggled to find a way out. Some people started dying because of the mass starvation and the conflict in our country. A refugee and IDP crisis can affect other global issues. If no one is willing to help a country with refugees, people will start to revolt in order to recieve attention from others. Many are left in poverty and struggle to survive. This could affect other nations because of the destruction that would be caused. Many of the refugees and IDP would have a difficult time trying to survive and the population of the country would decrease dramatically.
One day we were peacefully living our lives and the next we were at gunpoint, our lives threatened by those that wanted to kill us. Why, I don't know. They gave us 10 minutes to pack our things. Our neighbors took too long and we could hear gunfire and then screams. Powerless, we decided to take the things that we would need in the long run. Things that would help us out in the worst case scenario. The asylum process wasn't fair but thankfully our identification cards helped us out and we were granted permission to leave our war-torn country. An internally displaced person (IDP) or refugee crisis can create global issues like environmental destruction, poverty and education. This is because during war communities are destroyed. Homes and schools are destroyed and any park or recreation areas. When ever a military uses force there will be destruction. I just hope me and my family can start a new life in a new safe palce.

In class yesterday, we were assigned families and as families we had to figure out what our "necessities" were. Apparently we made the wrong decision since we did not choose to take identification cards along with us. We figured that taking something like blankets or a lantern would be of more use to us over the ID cards. However, those were the very thing we needed to actually help us to migrate to a new country when we were kicked out of our own homes. Since my family and I were IDP's we especially feel that the asylum process was not fair. We were basically left to die (which we even pretended to do). The refugee and IDP crisis takes up a big point in globally linked issues because innocent citizens of a country are kicked out of their houses, causing mass poverty. Also, this prevents many people from receiving an education, which is even more terrible because education is the key to moving forward in life. Without an education, most people will not know how to regroup from this terrible process.

immigrants-An immigrant is a foreign national who intends to establish a permanent residence in the United States, Canada or any outlying US territory.
internally displaced persons- are people forced to flee their homes but who, unlike refugees, remain within their country's borders.
refugees- refugee is a person who is seeking asylum in a foreign country in order to escape persecution, war, terrorism, extreme poverty, and famines.
When my mom, dad, brother and I were displaced we seeked refuge in a safer environment. In such s short amount of time my family and I narrowed the most important things down to what we would need to be safe and healthy. Luckily, we all knew how important it was to have an identity in this world and we brought along our ID cards and were accepted into asylum. Sadly afterward we were kicked out, we weren't sure what the problem was but all we knew was that we were scared and didnt know where to go.
Im sure situations like this are real in a world like todays, and I haven't the slightest clue what any family would do to get through a hardship so critical as this one. IDP crisis' can affect global issues because they cause chaos mong other countries to. They may worry, is it right for us to intject? Or do we stay out of the situation completely? They also put a dent in the economy because that country has to focus on taxing and other financial issues to fund a crisis.

I used to go to school. I wanted to do something great with my life. Now I am stuck in one cold and sickening place. They came into my home and broke everything! I grabbed my papers and water and ran away. I havn't seen any of my family since. While running, I lost my papers, so my government wouldn't let me leave the country and now I am considered an IDP. I'm scared every second, but I am thankful to still be alive and I hope my family is alive as well.

My family became a group of refugees when we were evacuated from out homes and sent out of the country in which we were born and lived in our entire lives. Because we had our identification cards we were not thrown in with the internally displaced persons, but with the other refugees. The process of selecting our household items to take with us was terrible. It was done in such a rush and since we were homeless we could only take 5 items. These had to be essential to our survival so the choice was a very big one. It was not fair though, because 5 items was not enough to make sure our family had what it needed to get by. The asylum process was not fair because no one cared about what would happen to us in the future and we had our children to think about.
A refugee or IDP can affect other global issues such as poverty, because when refugees are kicked out of their countries, usually their homes are destroyed along with all of their belongings inside of it. It is really unfair because the refugees have no where to return to and no home, being forced to start all over with the few items they have with them. This leads to serious poverty when a family is in a foreign country and is trying to earn enough money to obtain a new home, feed everyone, and send the children to school. It cannot all be done and burdens everyone in the family. For example, if this happened in a certain situation, the children might not be able to go to school, but would have to stay with their parents to work or take care of other manners that would take the place of school for them.
