I hope you enjoyed the yarn game. I also see that after this activity, you are getting more of an understanding of how all the world's issues are interconnected. Think about the following and be sure to post your reply here.

The interconnectedness of issues can often be the first step in solving problems. Interconnectedness is an important and key concept in “systems thinking”—a holistic way of thinking that takes into account the connections, interactions, and processes that link different elements together and form a complete “system”. By understanding that issues are interconnected, we can begin to see when and where we can intervene in a system to make change.

• Why else might it be helpful to understand how and why global issues are interconnected?
• How can understanding the interconnectedness of global issues help us find solutions to the problems surrounding these issues?
• How would life be different for you if you were affected by any of the problems we have discussed?• What are some examples of places we could intervene in a system and maximize positive connections between various issues? Identify not only where or when one could intervene in a system but how an individual’s actions can “snowball” – i.e. trigger other reactions in the system that build upon and sustain the positive effects of the original action. What kind of small action might snowball into a large result? How can small changes replicate and multiply to produce widespread and lasting change?

The activity in class helped the students see how global issues are connected. After the yarn game, when someone tugged on the string other people also felt the tug causing them to pull their string also. Understand global issues and how they are interconnected can be helpful when trying to solve problems but also in preventing future problems. If one issue isn't taken care of quickly, an outcame can be negative. It could unbalances things and other small issues turn into biger ones. Understanding interconnectedness can help find solutions to the problems that surround it. For example, if people are being discrimited, they may not have the equal opportunity to recieve an education like those who aren't being discriminated. We are already affected by the problems that were discussed in class. Depending on which problem, we would react different. However, there are places where people could intervene to maximize positive connections. Places such as third world countries or even in places where people live in poverty can be made into better places. A small action may snowball into a larger result like in China. Many people are working in factories where many people die and where many child laborers are found. A small change like giving people better healthcare and helping those in poverty can make the workers strive for a better education and lifestyle.

Good work Karmila. I quote part of your quote because it speaks volumes. As an individual what can you do to intervene? As a school, what can WE do to intervene? I feel there is always action that can be taken. What do you think you would do to take on any of the issues?

The yarn game that we did in class on Friday was a realistic way to see how when one issue is touched upon, it can affect another place, regardless of how far away or near it is. This occurs because of all the problems that are interconnected. It is rare for an issue to be unrelated to anything else; usually, the problems in the world form a sort of web that makes it difficult not see a result in one issue, when there is some type of activity in another. It is important to understand how worldwide issues are interconnected because then it is more likely that people will work towards them if they see how much it actually affects. My life is affected by some of the problems we have discussed such as global warming, and overpopulation, but it would be completely different if I was living in poverty. It scares me to imagine living on 1 or 2 dollars a day because not only would I be stripped of my every luxury, but I would hardly be getting by without food, electricity, or water. The good thing about having the worldly problems interconnected is that once we intervene in one issue and start to stabilize it, it can lead to fixing another issue as well. A good place to start working on resolving issues is the genocide in Darfur in Africa. There has already been help sent over but it is not doing much, so if we work on this problem it can snowball into working with poverty stricken areas. That is the significance of snowballing because it allows transition into similar areas. Even a small action of help can grow into something larger if it is spread and participated in by more and more people.

- It would definately be helpful to understand how and why global issues are connected because with all of that information we could figure out how to solve the problems. After all, two heads are better than one... especially if 6.6 billion heads workedtogetherto solve the world's problems.

- When many people work together on one project, you always get different opinions and points of view. This effects the solution.

- If what we discussed in class was real life for us, I'm sure we would wish to be where we actually are now. Out of harsh conditions and in a warm and safe home. Life would be different in so many ways, it's hard to think about.

-When i was younger, I beleived that every little thing you do effects everyone. For example, if you walked on one side of the side walk, the people walking towards you would have to move to the other side. What if they walked into a deli that they wouldn't have walked into if they were on your side of the sidewalk. In the deli they bought a lottery ticket and won! That all wouldn't have happened if you didn't walk on the other side of the sidewalk. Now, I realize it is a tad extreme now, but it is very much like the "snowball effect". One person trying to save the planet could very much well save the planet.

Usually, if one does not understand how and why global issues are interconnected, they will become lackadaisical. Then, they continue their habits that hurt the environment. For example, the ignorant will litter and go about their lives. However, the people that know about global issues and their interconnectedness will know that littering could harm an ecosystem, which will harm an organism, which will harm a food chain. By understanding how global issues are connected, people can teach others about it. That way, the message will spread. Also, people passionate about helping the environment will research their own ways to help. Meanwhile, those who don’t care at all and / or don’t understand the interconnectedness of global issues will simply do nothing. If everybody were affected by the problems discussed in class, there’d probably be higher grades. Quite simply, if everybody were poor and destitute, they’d go the extra mile to achieve success and someday earn a high paying job. That way, they’d be able to fiscally support their family and be able to buy edible sustenance. A simple way to trigger a snowball effect would be by recycling and teaching others about recycling. Many students don’t know how much they can make a difference by just recycling soda bottles and old work papers. If everyone learned about recycling, change would occur. Students would eventually teach their roommates, and they’d eventually teach their friends, who’d eventually teach their family [and so on]. To sum it up, small changes can make huge differences, but the first change that needs to be altered is ignorance about global issues.

The activity helped the students understand why the global issues are interconnected due to the extensive thread of difficulties we create. the global issues are reactions to one problem to the other. these issuea are important as they teach us what we are doin wrong. These interconnection may help us find a solution as we may find the root issue, and solve it so they all fall into the solution. if i faced any of those problems, i woulnd be where i am now.The ghetto faces many of these problems everyday struggling to survive.one may intervene in the system as they may donate or help homless people survive, and help them make a living. Small changes within the system may help lessen the issues as people may devlop a good working skills, therefore many of the issues would be eliminated.

Blog Post:

1. It might be helpful to understand how and why global issues are interconnected because, it can also help you while learning history and, human rights.

2. Understanding the interconnectedness of global issues can help us to find solutions to the problems surrounding the issue because, then a person will know there boundaries while searching for a solution.

3. My life would be different if I was affected by any of these problems because, there would always be a problem and, no happiness in my life. One example is New Orleans we could try and, help the people that are still living there get their lives back together again.

1. It might be important to understand why and how global issues are connected because, with that, we would know that there is a way anyone can help. since it is globaly connected, other places are aware and can help out.
2. Understanding the interconnectedness could help solve problems because we wil realize what is happeneing and come up with a solution. Being unaware is the problem.
3. My life would be different because that would be another problem added to the list of the normal problems everyday people have. A problem is never good for any person.
4. A place we could intervene about these issues and maximize connections would be in an enviornment like the C.S.I lunch area. this place is full of diverse people knowing different problems globaly.

Hey everyone! To be honest, the yarn game was a little boring, but sometimes, really boring things can really make a valid point! After we all shared the yarn around and made one big "Yarn Web", each person tugged on the string and someone felt that pull. As everyone did such, well all realized that everything, no matter what, is interconnected and that shows that if a conflict such as the genocide in Darfur is occurring overseas, it still has some impact on all of us! By doing this activity, it somewhat opened new perspectives to people about how everything affects others and what can be done to understand it better, and even do something about solving the issue of discussion! Take the Genocide in Darfur: thousands of people were killed and many cities and towns were burned to the ground because of 2 societies having a difference in one another. As the issue and crisis grows, citizens here in the United states are dealing with raising awareness and raising money to help support the crisis and the poor homeless people in darfur. You see, one issue affects many people no matter how far away!

Understanding how and why global issues are interconnected is helpful because we can learn how to easily change the world without traveling the world. For example, we can try to stop global warming by not littering, decrease our usage of fossil fuels and recycle daily. Everyone in this world can change something if we all work together, technology plays a big part in that role. Understanding the interconnectedness of the world we can find the solutions to the problems surrounding certain issues by being active in our society. Being globally active and inspiring others to become globally active will help us change the world.

what we did in class helped us to understand how everything in the world like with the yard and how everything some how some where in our society is connected.if one thing falls then another thing is connected and it will fall. i know it is awk. but true. interconnection could help us by helping what failed to be fixed . then the balance of helping people will be easily able to fix.also with that lesson it helped me by also wanting to help people fix their problems.

This activity we did in class was a good expericence on understanding how many different conflicts there are in the world today. As we connected with different problems thats going on which are all connected in many ways. for example poverty and starvation are big issues today and these problems are connected because startvation deals with people with no money to buy food which causes startvation. After the yarn game we pulled the yarn and at least three other people with different probles were felt with that conflict. This means that all problems in the world are connected and that we need to do something about this and change the way we do things in todays society.

The yarn game from class helped me see how issues in the world are interconnected. With the yarn game it showed us that if a problem occurs on one side of the world it effects the other side it showed us that by when one string was pulled you were able to feel it on the other side of the room. k im done bye!!!!!!!!!!!!!! vinny*

The yarn game we played was very important because like everyone said it was a great way to explain that no matter what all of are conflict are connected through technology. just like are yarn no matter what issue it was we all reacted to the same thing. In the yard if one person would pull lots of people would react to it it thats what she was trying to prove.

From what I hear of the yarn game, it thought us how one persons actions can effect another's. If one person tugged the person on the other side of the string would tug harder. It was a classic game of tug of war. Understanding how global issues are connected can prevent problems and if a problem is occurring it can help to find a solution to the problem. If one could look into the future and see how their idea will affect events and people around them then they could possibly change their decision. The War in Iraq would be an excellent example where an important person from either side could change the outcome of the war. But since humans are extremely selfish they only care about themselves and in this example only about their country. Here is why wars are never a positive thing for society of any country and why they are so deadly and violent.

Although with knotted yarn and the temptation to jump onto the crossing yarn, the activity clearly showed the fact that all global issues are linked. It is important to understand the connection between global issues because by solving one, you can also drastically improve another simultaneously. By understanding the interconnectedness of global issues, it can help us find solutions because I believe that all issues derive from one basic problem, poverty. If each nation possessed a abundant amount of money and directed them to their economic problems, most severe global issues would not exist. My life would be affected tremendously if any of these problems applied to me. I might possibly not attend school, suffer from famine, or not have access to clean water. However, some of the issues mentioned in during the activity apply to me, for example separation of social class, exposure to media, and global warming. By beginning a non-profit organization, a large impact can be made towards many global issues. By created a non-profit organization, others can join to fundraise, educate and advocate- the three most important goals in the process of improving global issues.

The yarn game was interesting because it showed how global issues are conected. Although they might all be directly connected, in some way they are connected. Understanding how and why global issues are connected is the first step to solving or improving the issue. Life would be different if any of the issues we talked about affected me because whatever issues affect people become what they are concerned about the most. For people who live in a starving country, that is what they are most concerned with.
