Global Issues Game Essential Questions

DUE FRIDAY 11/16/07

Hi kids:

As a follow-up to our class activity, I would like you all to answer the following questions based on the facts that were shared today.

1- What do you think are the most surprising
and/or shocking facts?
2- Discuss how the issues raised in the game
are connected to each other.
3- What issue(s) interest you the most and what
would you like to learn more about?

As a reminder here are some of the facts we covered:

The current human population of the world is 6.6 Billion.

The world’s human population in 1960 was 3 Billion.

The first to fourth most populous countries in the world are China, India, United States, and
Indonesia.

The world population is growing by about 80 million per year.

Roughly 40% of the world’s people live on $2 a day or less.

Roughly 20% of the world’s people live on $1 a day or less.

Because of urban sprawl in the United States, an area the size of Delaware is paved over each year.

In 1950, the average life expectancy worldwide was 49.

In 2000, the average life expectancy worldwide was 65.

After the class activity, the most shocking fact was that the life expectancy in 1950 was 49. Seeing as how, in 1950, there were not as many fast food chain monopolizing the world, it would make sense that there’d be less heart attacks. Also, without internet, it would be believable that people went outside often and got fresh air and healthy movement. Then again, less-advanced medicine could have still hindered old age, regardless of how robust people might have been back then. The issues raised in the game are interrelated. With more people in the world, there is less money and food to go around. Thus, many live below the poverty line. Also, with life expectancy growing, it would make sense that the world population is growing, too. The most interesting fact was the one about urban sprawl being as large as the state of Delaware each year. It would be intriguing to learn how this data was collected. Certainly, there must have been someone analyzing numbers to figure out that urban sprawl equated with the largeness of Delaware. How did they figure this out? More important, who figured this out?

Global Issues Games Essential Questions:

1.) What I thought was most surprising and/or shocking facts that I learned, was the amount of people that will be in this world by 2050 and, the four most popular cities.

2.) The issues raised in the game are connected to eachother because, they all connect to a certain or group of human beings on this earth and, they are all facts about our present life and, life in the future.

3.) The issue that interest me the most is, the fact about "How many people do you think bring home only $2.00 to there families?" and, those who bring home only $1.00. The one thing I would like to learn more about is, the people who are unfortunate in the world and, how the GOVERNMENT! is helping them.

The most surprising fact was that roughly 40% of world's people live on $2 a day or less. However, more disturbing is that about 20% of the world's people live on $1 a day or less, making that roughly 132,000,000 people. Poverty is one of the largest worldwide problems. To "eradicate extreme poverty and hunger" is the first of the 8 Millennium Development Goals set by the United Nations. By 2015, the United Nations hopes to reduce half the proportion of people living on less than 1 US dollar a day and reduce by half the proportion of people who suffer from hunger. The issues raised in today's class connect to each other because they all relate to world population. The world's population is increasing rapidly and the world will soon be over populated. An issue that interests me is education. The second goal of the 8 Millennium Development Goals is to "achieve universal primary education." The UN aims to ensure that all children complete a full course of primary schooling. Many children do not attend school because of their family's financial problems and must work in replacement. This is a serious issue that should be resolved because all children should be entitled to access to education.

Today's lesson was somewhat surprising. It's hard to understand how about 40% of the world's population live on $2 a day or less. Yet, in other countries, that can be seen more positive than it was percieved today in class. Since America's economy is in good shape, most fast food workers get $100 a week. That doesnt seem alot to Americans, but to people in poor provinces aroundthe world, it is rich. Since the world's population is growing more and more everyday, less space is being conserved for wildlife and other things. Industrialization is said to have ruined the planet, but it is basically the only way that we can fit this many people on the planet. It's kind of scary that the world's population doubled in forty seven years. I'd like to see how long we can keep this up.

After today's lesson on world's facts the most shocking fact that was dicovered by myself was that nearly half the world lives on @ bucks a day. during the game, each of the facts connected with each other as each of them related to the population and age of human beings on the earth. The population playes a big role on how much of thw world we take up. The age expectancy has increased due to medical advances. The topic i would like to be informed in more is the poulation growth. The growth seems to be a steady growth slope, but i wonder how accurate these statistics are. How are these numbers figured out accurately?

From today’s lesson I found the most surprising and shocking statistic to be that 40 percent of the world’s population lives on 2 dollars a day or less, and that 20 percent of the world’s population lives on 1 dollar a day or less. It is unimaginable to think that somewhere people are living in such extreme poverty that we cannot even wrap our minds around how unbearable everyday life for them must be. For a family to make an income of 1-2 dollars a day is ridiculous, it is not enough to support a whole family with proper food, shelter, and living conditions. The issues raised in the activity were based on overpopulation, global poverty, and life span. They are all connected to each other, as the statistics proved to us. In the past, due to lesser knowledge in the medical field, people did not live as long and often died at a younger age than present day. It is hard to believe that in 1950 the average life expectancy worldwide was 49; this age does not seem old at all now and is proof that as technology is increasing, the result will be a longer life span. This would be great, but on the negative side, it is causing a tremendously increasing population rate. Since people are living longer, the world is becoming more and more populated which is starting to cause a problem. The world can only hold so many people and no one knows whether the growth rate will be slowing down any soon. Also, this leads into poverty, which is due to the lack of employment for all. If there were less people, there would be more job opportunities for others. Honestly all of these issues interest me very much so because it is our responsibility to think ahead and to plan for the future. It is important to be aware of what issues are facing the world and to acknowledge what everyone really needs to know about them. I would like to learn more about what we can do to make an impact where help is needed.

1. The most shocking and surprising facts about the response pad trivia done in class today was the fact that I had no idea of how over or underpopulated the world was, my answer was always completely inaccurate.

2. The issues featured in this game are related to eachother because they show the worlds ups and downs when it comes to population and how much things can change over time.

3. I'd like to learn more about the population level in China when SARS hit and why population was so booming in the 1950's.

All of your comments are very insightful. I am very intrigued by by your insightfulness, your sensitivity and your ability to realize how all of these issues are connected. I would really like for all of to think about what we as a school can do and what you as individuals can do to help solve these problems. Remember: one person can make a difference! You can also think about how you can work to educate others about these problems. Think about living on $2 a day; it means not having an iPod, not having a cell phone, not having the latest sneakers, not being able to go to McDonalds after school, not being able to buy lunch, not having enough to eat, not having heat in your house, not being able to take a bus to get somewhere.... going to bed hungry and not being able to buy breakfast when you wake up in the morning!!! How different is this from your lives? What can you do to make a difference and to educate others about these problems?

By the way... the world is already overpopulated and we are destroying our environment! Again, what can you do to help?

Essential Questions:

Many of the facts from the class activity was either shocking or something we already expected. However, the three most shocking facts was that Indonesia is considered one of the four most popular country in the world and that people survived either 2 dollars a day or even 1 dollar a day. Indonesia seems like a prosperous country but it never occured to me that Indonesia could be popular. Also, I believe that there are many poor people in the world today that struggle to survive on the money they bring home. But $2 or $1 dollar a day can't help people to survive, especially in third world countries. Since the world population is growing, it will be harder to survive with the amount of money people live on. However, these issues are all connected to each other in some way or another. The population of the world may be connected to the poverty in the world. The population also relates to the urban spwarl in the US. People living on one or two dollars a day also affects the average life expenctancy of the world. All these issues interest be and I would like to learn about all of them and how it can affect us in the future. However, the facts that I would like to go indept into would be about poverty and life expectancy.

1. The most surprising fact to me was the fact that the world population is growing about 0 million per year. This scares me because each year the population is growing so widely. Imagine how things will be in the future, already having overpopulated areas as of now.
2. These are connected becasue with overpopultion, poverty arises also leading into starvation. People will be dying. along with that, more people more cars, leading to the adding effect of Global Warming.
3. Something i would like to learn more about is the fact that pavements the size of Deleware are paved over each year. This is interesting, i would like to know what will become of all these pavements.

Hey everyone! As the game provided for us, there are over 6.6 billion people living in the world today! Thats so many people its hard to imagine how everyone lives near one another in this world. The most shocking fact i saw that the life expectancy of an Average person was only 49 years old! The issues raised in this trivia game was both important and well informative! By playing this game, we learned that it would make since to understand how the population grows and how it affects our everyday lives. There was one question regarding on how many people receive $ 2.00 in the world to come home to their families? and the answer was amazing!

As a follow-up to our class activity, it is very surprising that it took the human race millions of years to reach a total population of three million and it has only taken about fifty years to more than double that population. It is shocking to see how fast we are growing now and how slow we were growing then. There is a difference in technology and we have grown in the millions of years that we have pondered upon the earth, but in my opinion the progress that we have made isn't enough to double the population in just fifty years. The facts that we have learned about are basic facts about the society of the earth. These are very simple facts but couldn't have been proven without technology. Therefore, these are all connected to each other because they have been determined by technology and all have to do with humans. The issue that interests me the most is "In 1950, the average life expectancy worldwide was 49. In 2000, the average life expectancy worldwide was 65." because I want to learn more about what caused the life expectancy to increase. Was it technology or nature? Also, I would like to find out more about shocking, similar like the ones we have covered on class that day.

The most surprising fact to me is the rate of growth of the world's population, and how much of that population lives on just 1 or 2 dollars a day.
The issues in the game prove that what we are doing on the planet is growing constantly, but the planet is not. It shows me that we have to work on bettering our planet if we are going to continue growth the way we have been in the past century.
The issue I would like to learn more about most is the issue of urban sprawl, and how we are killing natural life on the planet to expand cities.

The most shocking fact about the global issues game was the fact that the world population increased 3 billion since 1960. As the population grows the polution level increases. The pollution causes servere storms like Hurricane Katrina leaving thousands or even millions of people homeless. Since 1960 technology has obviously advanced and keeps us connected with the world without traveling. Another Shocking fact was 40% of the worlds population lives on 2$ a day. How Crazy!!!! If the government could spend lots of money on nuclear weapons they could afford to benefit the people in their country. If people use technology to make a positive change on the world. Instead of entertainment and making slanderous comments about the president and britney spears people should worry about what they can do and not what Michael Vick is doing. The world would be a much better place if people wanted it to. until then.

After the activity, what I think is the most shocking fact is that the world population is growing by 80 million people per yer. Since all the diseases in the world, lack of resources needed to survive, and overall deaths in the world I assumed that the number would be much smaller for increasing population. The issues in the game are related because one fact could be because of another one of the facts. For exaple, the world population could be increasing by a much larger number per year if 40 percent of the world didnt live on less than two dollars a day. The issue that interests me the most is what kinds of things are the reason for the world population increasing by 80 million people per year and what things could increase or decrease that number.
